All your fuses, including cartridge fuses are the weak link in your electrical circuit. A fuse comprises of a metal strip on the inside which is connected to the two metal ends on a fuse. In case of a short or electrical fault occurring in the electrical circuit and the circuit gets overloaded, the metal link will heat up and melt which will open up the circuit and result in shutting the power off. Once a fuse is blown, it will need to be replaced. When a cartridge fuse needs replacing, it must be replaced with the same type with the same voltage ratings and amperage.

Types of Cartridge Fuses
● Fast-acting fuses: These fuses are designed to quickly respond to overcurrent situations, offering immediate protection for sensitive electronic devices. Fast-acting fuses have a low melting point, which causes the filament to break rapidly when the current exceeds the fuse's rated value.
● Slow-blow fuses: Also known as time-delay fuses, slow-blow fuses are designed to withstand short bursts of overcurrent without breaking. This makes them suitable for applications where temporary overcurrents are common, such as in motors or transformers. The filament in slow-blow fuses has a higher melting point, allowing it to handle brief overloads without interrupting the circuit.
● High rupture capacity (HRC) fuses: HRC fuses are designed to handle high-voltage and high-current applications, offering superior protection for electrical equipment. They feature a special construction that allows them to safely interrupt high levels of fault current without producing harmful arc flash or other dangerous effects.
Components of a Cartridge Fuse
It is the part that covers the fuse.
The brass cap is usually found at the end of the fuse, where it is connected to a wire or a terminal. It not only protects the element inside of the fuse from damage but also helps in making a better connection between it and its respective wire.
It has two main parts, which are:
The element has to be resistant to high temperatures, so ordinarily it's made out of an alloy of nickel and chromium called nichrome.
The element will heat up when current flows through it and melts the glass insulator that separates it from its cap.
The melting glass creates an electrical short circuit so that no more current can flow through the device. When this happens, you'll have to replace your cartridge fuse as it's now useless.
This part of your cartridge fuse will protect your element from damage by keeping them separated even when they're heated up by an electrical overload. It is usually made out of a special type of glass that can withstand high temperatures.
Replaceable: When a fuse blows, it needs to be replaced with a new one of the same rating. This ensures that the circuit remains protected and operates safely.
Fast-acting: Cartridge fuses are designed to react quickly, typically within milliseconds, preventing excessive damage to equipment or even fires.
Various Ratings: Fuses come in a wide range of current ratings, allowing for appropriate protection of diverse electrical loads.

Cartridge fuses are a type of fast safety device used in electrical systems to protect cables, power lines, and equipment from overloads and short circuits. A cartridge fuse's primary function is to protect systems and human life. Ceramic, porcelain, or glass is used to make cartridge fuses.
It is made up of a glass tube with a thin fuse wire sealed inside. At each end of the glass tube, there are two metal caps. Furthermore, the fuse's two ends are connected to the metal caps. These metal caps are used to connect the fuse to the circuit in a suitable bracket.

Common Issues with Cartridge Fuses
Cartridge fuses play a crucial role in the electrical systems of locomotive engines. They are responsible for protecting the circuits from overcurrent and preventing damage to the equipment. However, like any other component, cartridge fuses can experience certain issues that need to be addressed promptly. Here are some common issues that can arise with cartridge fuses and simple troubleshooting tips to help resolve them.
Fuse blowing: One of the most common issues with cartridge fuses is when they blow or fail to operate properly. This can happen due to overcurrent or a short circuit. To troubleshoot this issue, start by checking if the fuse is correctly rated for the circuit. If it is, then there may be a problem with the equipment connected to the circuit, such as a faulty motor or a short-circuited wire. Inspect and repair or replace the faulty component to prevent the fuse from blowing again.
Loose connection: Another issue that can occur is a loose connection between the fuse and the fuse holder. A loose connection can lead to arcing, overheating, and eventual failure of the fuse. To address this issue, ensure that the fuse is properly seated in the fuse holder. If necessary, clean the contacts and tighten the connection to ensure a secure fit.
Corrosion: Over time, corrosion can accumulate on the contacts of cartridge fuses, leading to increased resistance and reduced electrical conductivity. This can result in overheating and premature failure of the fuse. It is important to regularly inspect the fuse contacts and clean off any corrosion using a suitable contact cleaner or a fine-grit sandpaper. Ensure that the contacts are free of dirt, dust, and moisture for optimal performance.
Cartridge Fuse Ratings
Cartridge fuses have both a continuous rating and a blow rating.
The continuous rating is the rating at which a current will continuously pass through without blowing. Due to surges in the current it is important that the continuous current does not exceed ~75% of the cartridge fuses blow rating, otherwise the cartridge fuse may blow needlessly.
The blow rating is the current that the cartridge fuse will blow at. Needless to say, the blow rating should be higher than the continuous rating and a factor of two is often applied. Therefore, a cartridge fuse with a 10A continuous rating would have a 20A blow rating.
Cartridge fuses should always be replaced like for like. Replacing a cartridge fuse with a higher blow rating can seriously compromise a circuit and can lead to a high risk of electrical fire due to component failure. Therefore care should always be taken when replacing cartridge fuses within a circuit.
The cartridge fuse includes a tubular insulating body having an opening at each of its ends, a ferrule terminal secured to each end of the insulating body, and a fusible strip supported within the body having its ends soldered or otherwise appropriately bonded to the ferrule terminals.
Each of the ferrule terminals is integrally formed from a tube of conductive material including an expanded ferrule cap portion at one end of the tube sized to fit over its respective end of the insulating body, and a flattened terminal portion at the other end of the tube forming a knife-blade terminal for the fuse. Additionally, a V shaped notch is formed in the interior of each of the ferrule cap portions which serves to retain or contain the molten solder which ultimately bonds the fusible strip to the ferrule terminals during assembly of the fuse.
The terminal portion of each of the ferrule terminals is initially only partially flattened to form a passage extending through the terminal. These passages are sized to receive the ends of the fusible strip to accommodate securing the fusible strip to the ferrule terminals by inserting eeach of the ends into one of the passages and flattening the terminal portions to firmly clamp the ends of the strip within the passages. Then, to further assure the integrity of the electrical connection between the fusible strip and the ferrule terminals, molten solder is injected into the outer ends of the flattened passages.
