Historically, it is typically an industry’s need for technology advances that ultimately drives adoption in a wide range of applications. For example, brighter, more-efficient and lighter displays – first developed by the television industry – now are integral part of consumer, commercial, industrial, military and aerospace applications. In a similar way, it would appear the demands of the automotive industry are driving advances in circuit protection technology.
Resettable devices are the ideal choice where overcurrent conditions are the result of a transitory fault condition, but in many applications, particularly where fault currents can result in serious damage to other circuits or systems, the traditional one-time fuse is still the best choice for protection. While traditional clip-mounted glass tube fuses are found in a host of applications and blade-type fuses are ubiquitous in automotive applications, the move toward smaller, distributed and embedded electronic functionality has elevated the demand for high-performance, space-saving surface-mount fuses. In a similar manner as chip inductors and multi-layer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), surface-mount fuses are packaged in a variety of EIA standard sizes determined by the technology uses and the rating.
While other surface mount, solid body fuses exist, this article focuses primarily on higher voltage applications that would generally utilize surface mount, wire-in-air fuses. In addition, information related to etched fuses is also presented, as they have garnered interest due of their low cost and limited use of board real estate.

Surface mount fuses (SMD fuses) work by converting electrical energy into heat, which melts the fuse when the current exceeds a certain level:
Electrical energy to heat
When the fuse is on, the resistance of the fuse converts electrical energy into heat.
Heat dissipation
The heat generated by the current radiates into the surrounding environment through the fuse and shell.
Fuse melts
When the current exceeds a certain level, the heat production is more than the fuse can dissipate, causing the fuse to melt.
Arc extinguishment
The melted fuse element severs the strain wire, which initiates arcing. The arc is extinguished in the arc-extinguishing chamber, either in the upper section for low-to-moderate fault conditions, or in the lower section for maximum fault conditions.
Fuse unit dropout
The arcing rod continues to travel upward, causing the actuating pin to penetrate the upper seal and initiate dropout of the fuse unit.

Fusing element
A metal strip or wire that carries the charge through the circuit. Surface mount fuses can have silver or nickel-chrome fusing elements.
Ceramic monolithic structure
A ceramic structure that can be used in the construction of surface mount fuses.
Multi-layer design
A design that exposes more of the fuse element to the glass-ceramic absorption material. This helps to quench the fuse arc more efficiently.
Silver termination
A silver termination with nickel and tin plating.
Operating temperature range
The temperature range at which the fuse can operate. For example, some surface mount fuses have an operating temperature range of -55°C to 125°C.
Voltage rating: The voltage rating of a fuse must be equal to or greater than the effective circuit voltage. The standard voltage rating series for general patch fuses are 24V, 32V, 48V, 63V, and 125V.
Resistance: The resistance of a fuse is not very important in the entire circuit. But for fuses with an amperage less than 1, the resistance will be a few tenths of an ohm, so this issue should be considered when using fuses in low-voltage circuits. Most fuses are made of positive temperature coefficient materials, so there are also two types of resistors: cold resistance and thermal resistance.
Environmental temperature: Fuses are temperature sensitive components. The current carrying capacity of the fuse was tested at an ambient temperature of 25 ℃. The higher the ambient temperature, the higher the operating temperature of the fuse, the lower the current carrying capacity of the fuse, and the shorter its lifespan. On the contrary, at relatively low temperatures, the lifespan of the fuse will be extended.
Rated capacity of fuse: Also known as breaking capacity. The rated fuse capacity is the maximum allowable current that a fuse can truly blow at rated voltage. When there is a short circuit, the fuse will pass multiple times an instantaneous overload current greater than the normal working current. During safe operation, it is required that the fuse remain intact (without bursting or breaking).
Nominal melting heat energy: Refers to the energy required to melt a fused component, expressed in I2t and read as "amperes per square second". Generally, in authoritative certification institutions, melting heat energy testing is required: apply a current increment to the fuse and measure the time of melting. If melting does not occur within approximately 0.008 seconds or more, the intensity of the pulse current will be increased.

There are several types of surface mount fuses available, each designed for specific applications and requirements. Some of the most common types include:
Fast-acting fuses
These fuses are designed to open quickly when subjected to an overcurrent condition, providing rapid protection for sensitive electronic components. They are commonly used in power supplies, telecommunications equipment, and other applications where a quick response is crucial.
Time-delay fuses
Also known as slow-blow fuses, these fuses are designed to withstand short-duration overcurrent conditions without opening. They are commonly used in applications with inductive loads, such as motors and transformers, where temporary current surges are expected.
Temperature-sensitive fuses
These fuses, also known as thermal fuses, are designed to open when exposed to excessive temperatures. They are commonly used in applications where overtemperature conditions pose a risk to the device or its components, such as battery packs and power tools.
